**His Toolbox Was Never Really About Tools** Every Saturday morning, before anyone else was awake, Michael opened the same red metal toolbox. It squeaked every time. The latch never closed properly. He always said he'd fix it. He never did. Inside, everything had its place. The hammer. The tape measure. A screwdriver with a cracked handle. Three pencils, all sharpened with a pocketknife. A handful of screws saved from projects long forgotten. Whenever something broke, someone called Dad. A loose cabinet door. A bicycle chain. A lamp that wouldn't turn on. A chair that wobbled. He rarely answered, "I don't know." Instead, he opened the toolbox. As children, we believed the tools fixed everything. Years later, we understood they weren't the important part. What mattered was this: Whenever something in the family felt broken, Dad showed up. Not always with answers. But always with time. He taught us without lectures. Measure twice. Don't force it. Take it apart before you panic. If something can be repaired, repair it. If someone can be forgiven, forgive them. After he died, the toolbox sat untouched on the workshop shelf. No one wanted to open it. It still smelled of machine oil, pine sawdust, and the peppermint candies he kept in one corner for the grandchildren. One afternoon, his youngest grandson, only nine, lifted the lid. The hinge still squeaked. Inside, everything was exactly where Grandpa had left it. Except one thing. Folded beneath the tape measure was a note written in his handwriting. Return borrowed tools. Hug your family. Both matter. No signature. None was needed. Today, the toolbox belongs to the next generation. The hammer has scratches. The tape measure sticks sometimes. The latch still doesn't close. No one has fixed it. Not because they can't. Because every squeak sounds a little like home. Open the Drawer There is probably one drawer, one shelf, or one box in your home that everyone knows belongs to one person. Open it with curiosity. The objects inside may tell you more about them than any résumé ever could. A Note from Homeriah The people we love rarely leave us instructions for life. Instead, they leave ordinary habits. A way of folding towels. A favorite mug. A toolbox organized just so. Those quiet patterns become the lessons we carry forward. Memory Prompt Find one drawer, toolbox, sewing basket, or box in your home that has belonged to someone in your family for many years. Before you move anything inside, take one photograph. Then ask yourself: if every object in this box could speak, what would it tell you about the person who owned it? The Question What ordinary object in your family quietly reminds you of someone's character? Not because it was valuable. Because it was used with love.

Jennifer got pregnant not long after we met, and around the same time I was in a bad highway accident that left another driver seriously hurt. The insurance barely covered a fraction of what I owed him, and between the six-figure debt and the fear of being a father with nothing to offer, I panicked and left before our daughter Lila was even born. I didn't leave a number or an address. This photo is from a few weeks before I left -- the three of us in our apartment, though I doubt anyone looking at it back then would've guessed how soon it would just be the two of them. It's the thing I'm least proud of in my life, and I've had a long time to sit with it.
